Tim Steffens, Ph.D., is associate professor and extension range specialist with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and holds a joint appointment with West Texas A&M University Agricultural Sciences. His research interests include managing ecological succession using targeted grazing management; the effects of grazing management strategies on plant communities, soils, watershed function, wildlife habitat, and livestock productivity; developing integrated livestock-rangeland-cropping systems to improve soil quality and improve conservation. Dr. Steffens has brought in over $694,000 in extramural funding. His current project is evaluating ways to integrate annual small grains into perennial grass pasture for winter forages and possible grain harvest in the High Plains. As part of his extension appointment, he teaches a comprehensive grazing and ranch management school that covers economics, ecology, livestock nutrition and reproduction, and strategic and operational level grazing management. To date there have been nine separate schools with over 158 individual paying participants representing more than 140 operations comprising more than 500,000 acres and over 25,000 cattle from 20 counties in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Kansas.
